Selection
of the North American Car and Truck of the Year begins with
a list of all the eligible vehicles, which means vehicles
that are substantially new or have been modified to change
their nature, such as a high-performance version of an existing
vehicle. This is referred to as the “long list.”
|
| |
 |
Early
in September the jurors review the long list and pick the vehicles
they think deserve additional consideration and a place on the
ballot. They are asked to limit their list to 10 cars
and 10 trucks but are told to give the benefit of the doubt
to vehicles they have not yet driven. So, their list may exceed
10 cars and 10 trucks. This is called the short list. |

 |
No
later than December 3rd jurors send their ballots to Deloitte
& Touche’s office in Detroit. Deloitte then
notifies the seven-person organizing committee of the three
cars and three trucks with the most points. Those vehicles are
identified in alphabetical order and the winners is not revealed.

| |
 |
On
Wednesday, December 12 the three car finalists and
the three truck finalists will be revealed at a news conference
at a luncheon hosted by the Detroit Economic Club. |
| |
 |
Then the jurors will
vote again on the three car and three truck finalists.
Those ballots will, again, be sent directly to Deloitte and
Touche no later than January 2nd. The accounting firm will keep
those results secret until early January and a news conference
at the North American International Auto Show.
